RE:         Thanksgiving Food Drive

Dear Castle House Parents,

Hello!  I am requesting that you and your child take part in our 7th  Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.  The food that your child will bring into school will be added to the food drive of The Westmoreland Food Bank that will provide families in our community with a complete Thanksgiving dinner.  So, your generous food donation will not only help families in our entire community, it literally could help feed your child’s friends at Franklin Regional MS.

The Westmoreland County Food Bank is trying to place an entire Thanksgiving dinner together for these needy families.  The suggested menu to feed a family of 4-6 over the holiday is below.  You may donate any or all the items from this menu.

  • 1 10-12 lb. turkey (frozen please)
  • 2 cans gravy
  • 2 cans whole kernel corn
  • 2 cans peas or green beans
  • 2 cans sweet potatoes
  • 2 cans cranberry sauce
  • 2 packages of instant stuffing mix
  • 1 large box of instant mashed potatoes
  • 4-6 oranges
  • 4-6 apples
  • 1 package dinner rolls
  • 1 apple, pumpkin, or other fruit pie (no frozen pies please)
  • 1 package of holiday cookies
  • ½ - 1 gallon of apple juice or apple cider

The Franklin Regional Middle School will be conducting a school wide food drive from now until Friday, November 19th to assist the Westmoreland County Food Bank prepare for the holiday season. The Castle house will be holding a Thanksgiving contest within this school-wide food drive.  To date, the Castle House Thanksgiving Food Drive has collected 155 complete turkey dinners for families of Westmoreland County. Our goal each year is to see if we can beat last year’s totals of 750 pounds and 39 turkeys.  In 2008, we raised 32 turkeys and raised 900 pounds of food.  In 2007, we raised 650 pounds of food and 29 turkeys.  This total was greater than the 22 turkeys of 2006, but less than the 905 pounds of food rose that year.  In 2005, we collected 941 pounds of food, which included 19 whole frozen turkeys that was up from the 541 pounds and 14 turkeys from 2004.

If the students and parents of the Castle house can help us beat this goal, the Castle teachers will reward the students handsomely with an award to be named in the coming week.  If the Castle House can produce as much or more than 39 turkeys and over 750 pounds of food, the reward activity will be on Wednesday, Nov. 24th before Thanksgiving break. Please note that all food listed above must be turned into to Mr. Cooley’s room by Friday, November 19, 2010. Please make sure you have Castle House and your child’s homeroom listed on the item to make sure it gets to Mr. Cooley’s classroom.  Take care and thank you for your time.  Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Your Castle House teachers
