Mr.
Cooley ran the 2008 Erie Marathon on Sunday, Sept. 14th. His goal
was 3 hours and 30 minutes. After 18 miles, he was on pace!
At mile 18, he was struck with the worst leg cramp pain he had ever
experienced, and his pace went from 8:00/mile to 11:00/mile! The
loss of 3 minutes per mile over the last 8 miles added 24 minutes to his
race, and he finished the race in 3 hours 55 minutes. He finished
in 101st place out of 409 runners (top 25%) and 15th out of 47 runners
(top 33%) in his age class. He was so dehydrated due to the
temperature of the race of over 80 degrees and extreme humidity, that he
ended up at the emergency room Sunday evening requiring 2 packages of IV
fluid.
